Life at CSRS

Useful information

Stay and working rules presented to researchers hosted at CSRS in the legacy institutional page.

Stay and working conditions

These regulations set out the conditions governing researchers’ stays and work at CSRS. Researchers and their supervising research directors must be informed of them before their stay at CSRS and must undertake in writing to comply with them in all circumstances.

Use of laboratories

Each researcher is entitled to a workstation. The CSRS Director will allocate it according to the researcher’s needs and the Centre’s available facilities. The Director will also provide the basic equipment required for the research, according to the same criteria.

Researchers are responsible for maintaining and cleaning their workstations; the laboratory itself is cleaned by CSRS staff.

Researchers are responsible for the CSRS equipment they use in their research and must ensure that it is returned in perfect condition.

Any damage to equipment must be reported immediately to the Director. The Director may charge researchers for damage resulting from clear negligence.

Specialised equipment and supplies — glassware, chemicals, instruments, etc. — are provided by the researcher. Basic supplies — simple glassware, commonly used products, etc. — are provided by CSRS subject to availability.

Researchers working in the laboratories must read and sign the laboratory regulations.

Use of the CSRS grounds

Researchers may use the CSRS grounds solely for scientific purposes — animal rearing, planting, outdoor experiments, etc. — provided that this does not detract from the appearance of CSRS or disturb its residents. Such use requires the Director’s approval.

After these experiments, the grounds must be restored to their original condition.

Use of CSRS technical staff services

Researchers may use the services of CSRS technical staff for their scientific work. This also requires the Director’s prior authorisation; the Director will set priorities where necessary.

Additional temporary staff may be hired either directly by the researcher or through the Director. Researchers must obtain the Director’s approval before hiring technical staff.

In all cases, temporary staff will be hired in the name of, and at the expense of, the researcher concerned. The researcher is responsible for ensuring that the staff’s employment arrangements comply with the legislation in force — salary, CNPS contributions, etc. The Director will provide the necessary information.

Fees for technical staff services

The Director will calculate the allowances using the information provided by researchers. Researchers may not deduct benefits provided in kind. Allowances must be paid to the Director against the invoice issued for this purpose, never directly to the employee.

Use of CSRS vehicles

A number of motor vehicles are available to researchers for their scientific work. The CSRS Director allocates vehicles according to researchers’ needs and CSRS availability. The Director will set priorities where necessary.

The driver assumes full responsibility for the vehicle from departure — checking water, oil, lights, brakes, tyre pressure, etc. The user may be charged for any damage resulting from failure to carry out these checks or from serious carelessness.

If a vehicle is parked in a village for an extended period, the researcher may be held responsible for any damage, at the Director’s discretion.

Researchers’ private use of vehicles requires the Director’s approval and is subject to the same conditions. Transporting third parties and lending vehicles to third parties are prohibited. The Director may grant exceptions for transporting friends or family members.

Use of residential accommodation

Researchers and official visitors are entitled to accommodation at CSRS. The Director allocates it according to researchers’ needs and the Centre’s availability. A single person is entitled to a room and cooking facilities; couples and families are entitled to accommodation with two or more rooms. A single person may rent available accommodation with several rooms but must vacate it immediately if another person or family needs it.

The accommodation is modestly furnished and includes bedding and crockery. CSRS also supplies gas, water and electricity. Researchers are responsible for maintaining their accommodation. Any damage must be reported immediately to the Director; damage resulting from clear negligence may be charged to the researcher.

At the end of their stay, researchers must return their accommodation in perfect condition. Rent will be invoiced monthly at a rate set by the Commission. Excessive electricity consumption will incur an additional charge.

Temporary accommodation at CSRS for a researcher’s friends or family members is possible subject to available space and requires the Director’s authorisation.

Use of a cook

Researchers may hire a cook during their stay, either directly or through the Director.

Such employment requires the Director’s approval.

The cook will be hired in the name of, and at the expense of, the researcher concerned. The researcher must ensure that the employee’s employment arrangements comply with the legislation in force — salary, CNPS contributions, etc.

The Director will provide the necessary information.

General provisions

The CSRS Director will provide researchers with all the scientific, administrative and material support required for their research to proceed smoothly. This does not exempt researchers from carrying out certain procedures themselves — bank withdrawals, authorisation to visit Taï National Park, clearance of air freight through a freight forwarder, etc. The Director will provide the necessary information and assistance in difficult cases.

Any disagreement between researchers or with local staff must be referred immediately to the Director.

The Director will refer any conflict that cannot be resolved locally to the Commission.

Project-owned vehicles: the CSRS vehicle maintenance service can help researchers who own vehicles resolve difficulties with mandatory documents and inspections — road tax sticker, SICTA inspection and insurance. Researchers remain responsible for maintenance and repairs, carried out at a garage or, with the Director’s authorisation, by the CSRS maintenance service upon reimbursement of the mechanic’s working hours.

Researcher's scientific obligations

At the end of the year, every researcher who has worked at the Centre must submit to the Director a one-page scientific report in French or English on their work at CSRS. The report must be written in a form suitable for publication in the CSRS activity reports.

Researchers staying at CSRS for more than one year must submit a scientific report to the Director at the end of each year.

Two offprints of publications concerning work carried out wholly or partly at CSRS, or using material from CSRS, must be submitted to the CSRS Commission as soon as they are published.

Where possible, researchers will be invited to publish their work in the journal Sempervira.
