Prof Sam Sheppard, Digital Microbiology and Bioinformatics lead at IOI, has been awarded a Wellcome Trust Discovery Award of £5m to develop vaccines against the diarrhoea-causing bacteria Campylobacter.
Campylobacter infections are the second most common cause of death among children under five years of age in low- and middle-income countries.
Prof Sheppard will work with a team of nine co-PI's across 19 countries to tackle this challenge.
The award from Wellcome will create opportunities for up to 8 PhD’s and Fellowships for African researchers over 8 years.
