Ethical Conservation: Integrating Community-Based Approaches in Primate Research and Conservation

🎓 Capacity building Core APS mission — designed for students and early-career researchers
💡 Building the capacity of the next generation of African primatologists is a central APS mission. In keeping with previous congress traditions (workshops on bioinformatics, scientific writing, grant applications and field methodologies), APS 2026 will offer a post-congress training programme specifically designed for students and early-career researchers.

🎯 Training objectives

  • Strengthen the practical skills of young African primatologists in research and conservation.
  • Provide hands-on experience of methods applicable to primate conservation in Africa.
  • Build networks among young African primatologists and connect them with senior mentors.
  • Equip participants with tools to design ethical and participatory conservation projects.

📚 Training modules (planned)

Module 1: Ethical Frameworks in Primate Conservation

Introduction to ethical considerations in the field, including research with indigenous and local communities, data ownership, community consent protocols and equitable partnerships.

Module 2: Field Methodologies for Primate Surveys

Hands-on training in standard survey and monitoring techniques: distance sampling, camera trap protocols and habitat assessments.

Module 3: Scientific Writing and Publication

Structuring a scientific paper, targeting appropriate journals, responding to peer review and communicating findings to non-specialist audiences.

Module 4: Grant Writing and Project Development

Identifying funding opportunities, developing competitive proposals, budget management and donor reporting. Particular focus on funders active in African conservation.

✅ Eligibility

  • Master's and PhD students in primatology or related disciplines
  • Researchers who obtained their PhD within the last 5 years
  • Early-career practitioners working in primate conservation in Africa
Priority will be given to applicants from African institutions. Applicants must also be registered for the main congress (APS 2026, 8–11 September 2026).

💰 Fees and support

✨ Thanks to sponsor support, participation in the training is free of charge for selected applicants.

  • Where possible, accommodation during the training days will be subsidised.
  • A limited number of travel bursaries covering travel within Africa to Yaoundé will be available for participants who could not otherwise attend.

Morning: Module 1 – Ethical frameworks (Central and West Africa case studies) and group discussion on community consent.
Afternoon: Module 2 – Field methodologies for primate surveys (practical session near Yaoundé).
Evening: Networking and mentoring session with senior primatologists.
Sunday
13 Sep 2026
Morning: Module 3 – Scientific writing and publication (peer review simulation, writing clinic).
Afternoon: Module 4 – Grant writing and project development (proposal workshop + funder panel).
Closing ceremony: Certificate distribution and feedback session.
